And this is precisely what makes us human!

What? No mention about us being the only species that is able to make rational choices?

Nope.
First of all we are not the only ones, chimps and computers – among others – are also able to ‘reason’, in variable degrees.
Secondly, and way more important, reason is nothing but a tool. And tools are very, very important but not essential. Just as our hands and feet, they are extremely useful but being able to use them isn’t enough to make us human.

I was led to this understanding by the rapid succession of three events. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the book lists mania that has currently engulfed FB and the eulogy read by Barak Barfi for his friend Steven Sotloff.

The Ice Bucket Challenge shows that we care, the fact that we post lists of books on FB so that complete strangers can gouge our personalities (real, pretended or a little bit of both) means that we are aware (of our public image) and Steven Sotloff loosing his life to a bunch of criminals while doing his best “to give a voice to people in war-torn lands” demonstrates that humans dare to do what they feel is right even when confronted with mortal dangers.

Still unconvinced?

Can you spell Stephen Hawking? And do you think that being able to spell proves you are human? Are you sure… chimps can do that too, you know? (Well, to a degree and using a computer, but still! http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/chimps.htm)
Now, have you ever heard of the ‘obedience experiment’ carried out by Stanley Milgram? Although aware of the potentially dangerous  consequences of their actions only about 33% of the participants dared to contradict the ‘authoritative figure’ that was apparently in charge of the whole thing. And even more interesting is the fact that nowadays experiments like these would be considered illegal/unethical preciselly because of their effects on the participants. Check the first one.
Let’s go back to Stephen Hawking. He is the owner/operator of one of the finest minds ever endowed to a man. His reason is as precise as that of a computer while his imagination goes way beyond the limits of the Universe and way down into the realm of the invisible. And yet, what did he do when he found out he’ll soon loose the use of his limbs and will eventually need a machine to help him breathe? When he slowly became aware that those horrible things were actually happening to him?
Did he allow his beautiful mind to go berserk in self pity – the pinnacle of ‘caring for his own self’, the self preservation mania that is aggressively conquering more and more ground?

Or did he dare to continue with what he thought it was right for him to do?

You’ll rightly tell me that he couldn’t have survived if he wasn’t immensely lucky. That he was born in an era when technology was advanced enough, that he had already proven himself so material resources needed for his survival weren’t a problem, and that he had met the right people. True. But he did more than merely survive. He continued to create. To bring new ideas and understanding into the world.

– ‘OK’, jumps another one of you, ‘but what’s the difference between him an Hitler, lets say, or any other dictatorial sociopath that uses immense resources and top technologies to impose his understanding of the world on the rest of the people’?

Well, another excellent question!
A long time ago I had read something to the tune of: ‘Had Hitler been born in Britain he would have ended up in a loony bin, not running the show into the ground’. (I’m awfully ashamed for not being able to remember who said/wrote this nor internet savvy enough to identify the author.) The idea is that for a dictatorship to take hold you need way more than a guy, no matter how intelligent, powerful and devious. You also need a considerable number of people who dare not express dissent whenever they dislike/disagree with anything.

The point is that all three members of the triad that makes my title are equally important.
Being aware of the needs and caring for those around makes for a very good and obedient slave in the absence of daring while being a self conscious and uncaring dare-devil is meeting the first two requirements for becoming a dictator.
What happens with someone who dares and cares (mainly about himself, but not exclusively) while he is only marginally aware of the wider repercussions of his actions? Does the notion of ‘mad scientist’ ring any bells? Or ‘executioner’?

In fact if all three legs of the triad were equal the individual described by that triad would behave in a considerate and respectful manner towards all people, irrespective of social status, wealth or even age. In political terms that person would actively, persistently and politely reject any form of authoritarianism while in economic terms it would be a staunch defender of the free market.

sotloff

I don’t particularly like to contradict other people but it’s exactly the fact that he didn’t see himself as being one that transforms him into one of my heroes.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.

mowing video games

So what do we have here?
An angry dad tries to cure his 24 years old son, who had never had a job, of his obsession for video games.
Meanwhile some other member of the household (a brother of the ‘video-games maniac’?) videotapes the whole thing (and has a jolly good time while at it). Click on the picture and watch it.

By now most of you have already sided with one of the two protagonists, right?
Are you sure you picked the right side? Well, admitting that the whole thing wasn’t ‘staged’…

First of all let me ask you when did that father find out that his son was so obsessed with gaming? Yesterday? And I don’t think he (the father) is a dimwit, check out his property…
Secondly, what would it be like to live in the same house with someone (a brother?) who acts like the guy who is filming the whole scene… Not the filming part, no, the lack of empathy – remember the chuckles? – is what’s bothering me.
Finally, we have reached the ‘main culprit’. No, he is not without any blame either, contrary to what some of you may think. OK, maybe he plans to become a professional gamer. Yes, there are some people who spend their lives in this manner. With relative success too! But how come his father doesn’t know about that? After all he lives into his father house, eats at his table and is already 24 years old…

Now don’t you think it’s high time for us to stop playing the blame game and to start understanding what’s going on with our youth? After all they didn’t grew up in a vacuum, it’s us who had helped them – in more ways than one – to become what they are now.

“Rotherham: In the face of such evil, who is the racist now?”

I understand that in the current circumstances ‘racism’ ‘sells’ but shouldn’t we refrain from making things worse than they already are? After all we live in this world too, don’t we?!?

What happened there is that in the last 16 years fourteen hundred (1400) kids were raped, mostly by Pakistani men, while the authorities did nothing. Not because they didn’t know, mind you.
And instead of trying to understand how come the entire social organism failed abysmally some continue to play the blame game…

The key to all these is the fact that those children were abused not only by the rapists themselves but also by the authorities.
Further more the rapists thought it was OK to do what they did (they wouldn’t have done it on such a large scale otherwise but they were horribly wrong) while the authorities should have known, at least deep in their hearts, that they were acting  cowardly – to use the least inflammatory word.

And the main hurdle that needs to be overcome is indeed ‘racist’ thinking and ‘politically correctness’ – in the twisted acception that this notion has been given lately.

“Powerless WHITE working-class girls were caught between a hateful, IMPORTED culture of vicious misogyny on the one hand, and on the other a culture of chauvinism among the police, who regarded them as worthless slags. Officials trained up in DIVERSITY and POLITICAL CORECTNESS failed to acknowledge what was effectively WHITE slavery on their doorstep. Much too embarrassing to concede that it wasn’t WHITE people who were committing racist hate crimes in this instance.”

Racism isn’t about the color of the skin, it’s about putting the blame, squarely and indiscriminately, on ‘the different other’.
Ignore the capitalized words while reading the last quoted paragraph and you’ll understand what I mean. Don’t worry that the last sentence has become a lot more powerful this way… those who perpetrated this, both the rapists and the authorities, were not people at all! Regardless of their creed or anything else.

Just saw this picture:

giraffe, coffee

Couldn’t resist adding this comment:
‘Cold’ as in less hot than it was when it first touched the giraffe’s lips, not cold as in colder than the giraffe itself, right?
Anyway what kind of people would ever think about a giraffe drinking coffee?
The kind of self centered joker who twists his mind in constant search for new and devious ways to pester the others?
😀 😀 😀

check first    stop for the school bus
‘Supposed to stop’ and ‘will stop’ are two completely different things. We dearly need to teach our children that their safety is primarily their responsibility and that they need to check first (that the incoming driver has stopped, for instance) and act only when the circumstances allow it. Hoping that the adults will behave in a responsible manner is a legitimate wish but nothing more than that.
Educating the reckless drivers (punishment is a legitimate teaching tool) can make a difference indeed so we should pursue this venue also but there is a catch here.
Don’t you think that our current attitude towards the children conveys some sort of indifference about ‘tomorrow’?
Treating our children like they were totally irresponsible morons only encourages them to behave as if they really were so. And do you honestly imagine they’ll morph into ‘grown-up adults’ in a jiffy when they’ll reach the ‘magical’ age of legal drinking after being treated like that?
And something else.
People not only don’t stop for the school buses but also rip off children financially (high tuition and huge public debts that will fall in their laps), nutritionally (kids are among the preferred targets for the advertisers who promote junk food), emotionally (we abandon our kids in front of their computers, laden with stupid video games we sell to their parents for a hefty profit) and even sexually [ (long time) “Child abuse victims in Britsh town claim compensation” ] .

Is it because we don’t care anymore? Have we lost all our hope for tomorrow and trust in our fellow human beings?

Tocmai in Grecia.
In magazinele de genul asta singurul contact dintre clienti si personal are loc la casa.

Foarte interesante aceste trei asertiuni.

Intrarea in UE.
In ce priveste administratia publica…imi permit sa am anumite indoieli…

Adica omenii, constituentii acelui grup, sa fie in stare sa formeze/pastreze/adapteze legaturi (reguli de interactiune) intre ei si, in acelasi timp, sa stabileasca/pastreze/adapteze o interactiune functionala cu mediul/spatiul in care traieste comunitatea respectiva.

Fac o paranteza.

Hait!

text neck

“At this point, it seems like our electronics are out to kill us because a doctor is warning rabid texters of a new condition called “text neck.” “ according to an article recently published by Gizmodo

Anyway the writer has a funny sense of humor: ‘…our electronics are out to kill us because a doctor is warning rabid texters of a new condition…’?!?
Am I to understand that ‘our electronics’ got mad at us because of the good doctor’s warning and this might constitute the reason for which “… our electronics are out to kill us…”? And it’s ‘the health craze’ that’s going to injure us, not our bad habits, eh?

Oh boy….
