On why it is of utmost importance to have proper back up…

Plant Electrician's avatarPower Plant Men

The very last thing I ever learned in High School was the importance of Backup Battery Preventative Maintenance. In fact, the entire senior class of 1978 at Rockbridge High School in Columbia, Missouri learned this lesson at the same time. It was during the graduation ceremony in May while the students were walking across the stage to receive their diplomas.

I had already received mine and I was back in my seat sitting between Tracy Brandecker and Patrick Brier (we were sitting alphabetically. My name is Breazile). Pat was sitting on my left and Tracy was on my right. We were grinning from ear-to-ear to be graduating. My friends from the second grade, Mark Schlemper, Russell Somers and Brent Stewart had just walked across the stage in the gymnasium while a storm raged outside. As my friend from the fifth grade forward, Matt Tapley was walking across the stage there…

Aceasta îi soarbe însetată şi buzele-i crapă

de dor.

Sunt sărate ca lacrimile.

Oamenii trec pe lângă mine grăbiţi

şi mă rănesc nepăsători.

Le încurc paşii cu inima mea

mare.

Hei, doamnă, nu vezi pe unde calci!?

Ce dacă e aşa, uriaşă, crezi că nu-o doare

pasul tău

plin de ură?

Pardon, domnule, fie-ţi milă, n-o lovi,

că nu ştii cât suferă!

Ce-ai, cucoană?

Treci printre noi cu inima ta uriaşă

şi-ai vrea ca noi să avem grijă de ea?

Du-o la ospiciu, nu are ce căuta

printre noi,

oamenii normali!

E un monstru,

un defect genetic,

vrei să ne molipsim de

boala ei?

Noi suntem ocupaţi, nu avem

timp şi nici chef

Arranged marriages weren’t so bad, after all ?!?
Oxytocin is a hormone that is secreted by the brain during birth, breast feeding and …sex. It modulates how we feel towards the person who is next to us when the hormone inundates the brain.

Another poignant reminder.
It doesn’t matter who came first, the chicken of the egg, but what each of them did in the given circumstances.

Strange fate for a “privately run and closely held” company.
Or maybe not…

” Companies lack the capacity to intelligently analyze the data and they lack the systems and data structures to provide the usable data even though such data exists.”
….
“But Kenexa, which tested 30 million applicants last year for thousands of clients, has found that a lengthy commute raises the risk of attrition in call-center and fast-food jobs. It asks applicants for call-center and fast-food jobs to describe their commute by picking options ranging from “less than 10 minutes” to “more than 45 minutes.” The longer the commute, the lower their recommendation score for these jobs, says Jeff Weekley, who oversees the assessments.”

So they needed to analyze a ton of data to figure out that even the people who (have to) accept relatively low skilled/payed jobs are rational enough to use every opportunity to shorten their commute?!?

Well done, guys!

Read the entire post, Tim Ackermann does a good job at sorting out the current myth about ‘Big Data’.

While preparing some presentations for HR and recruitment peers I researched and re-thought the trends (aka buzzwords :-)) which are currently discussed in the HR and online community. I will add my thoughts over the next weeks (hopefully not months) and start with Big Data. Also thanks to @carllsons who included this topic in his presentation at the Social Media in HR Summit a few weeks ago.

Generally speaking, Big Data is…

… a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools. The challenges include capture, curation, storage, search, sharing, analysis, and visualization. The trend to larger data sets is due to the additional information derivable from analysis of a single large set of related data, as compared to separate smaller sets with the same total amount of data, allowing correlations to be found to “spot business trends, determine…

Autorii numesc…

The most horrible thing about this poster is that it contributes to the fallacy that having five cars and a huge mansion will necessarily make you happy.
The way I see it the ‘war on inequality’ is following in the steps of the ‘war on drugs’ and the ‘war on terror’.
Fighting symptoms never cures the ailment, at most it provides temporary relief until the patient’s death, pun intended.
What we need is something to hope for, to believe in.
