making the best of what ever happens to you doesn’t necessarily mean that you should put up with what ever shit people throw at you!
This post was spurred by a very interesting exchange on the FB:
“Why do people choose negativity over positivity?”
Well… probably because if you pay attention to the ‘wrongs’ of this world you increase your chances of survival so we are somehow conditioned for this, simply because more of those who don’t die earlier than those who do….
And this brings me to ‘why survive?’
Simple, this is the only way you can enjoy ‘happiness’.
So are we entitled to do whatever, I mean absolutely whatever, in order to survive? Well…
For one it depends on what one understands about survival. For me it isn’t enough to be alive. I also need to be able to meet myself inside my consciousness without being ashamed of myself.
But there is also another reason for us to behave. A normal society responds quickly when individuals start acting in ways that endanger the survival of others.
So what is left of ‘pursuit of happiness’? Maybe this a misunderstanding. If we believe ‘happiness’ to be a valid goal in life then we’ll try to maximize it, sometimes – because we are not ‘perfect’ – at the expense of our survive-ability: we smoke, we eat and drink too much, we do drugs…
What about understanding ‘happiness’ as an indicator for ‘being on the right track’ for long time survival? What about using the good-feeling sensation we experience when we are having a nice meal as an indicator that we had enough instead of an incentive to continue gorging?.
For more information about how to be happy in a ‘survivable’ way try Csikszentmihalyi’s “Flow”.
In principiu o masura corecta.
I had an earlier post about ‘shareholder value maximization’ were I argued that this notion has to be treated with the utmost of care.
Here is a reminder of how close to the hell ‘profit before all else’ can take us:
Safety warning as budget airlines such as Ryanair cut fuel levels for flights.
‘Have a nice flight’ towards the ‘jet set’ status.
El intra in mod natural in compozitia oaselor.
Daca va intereseaza mecanismele dupa care apar cresterea densitatii osoase in anumite zone si descresterea ei in alte zone aveti aici amanunte: http://www.globenet.org/preceup/pages/ang/chapitre/capitali/cas/indme_e.htm
Concluzia mea e simpla.
In ceea ce priveste teoria conspiratiei…
One of my obsessions is that if the decision making processes become too centralized then the whole system is already struggling inside some very dire straits.
Here is a rather unusual example.
Tampering with a car’s brakes and speed by hacking its computers: A new how-to
Now why on Earth would the remotely accessible (hack-able) devices of a car be hooked up to some essential components like the braking system or the steering column?
Simple. This way it is easier/cheaper to program/debug/service the entire system. The operator needs to ‘enter’ only once – otherwise he would have to hook up at least two times, one for the essential systems and a second for the rest.
And since the automakers are in the business of making money, not safe cars – just like the farmers – every $ counts….
People seem to be more and more fed up with the current situation.
So much so that individuals take matters into their own hands, no longer trusting the temporal powers that be would fulfill their duty.
Martin Zimmerman tried to improve the safety of his neighborhood.
Bradley Manning tried to expose something he believed to be wrong.
Edward Snowden did essentially the same thing.
What next?
Friedman’s idea that the CEO’s job is to take care of the shareholders’ interests, including the monetary ones, is a platitude.
It’s the exclusive focus on the monetary aspects and its short term-ism that constitute the malignancy of this venue.
